Dear Mrs. Boutilier,

For my Capstone project I want to teach middle school students as well as preschoolers about taking care of animals. I plan to present a powerpoint about proper animal care to the middle schoolers at our school on October 8th to  November 12th. For the preschoolers, I plan to show them how to handle animals and take care of them in January. I decided to do this project because I have always loved animals. I have been volunteering at Eleanor Buck Wolf Nature Center in Wethersfield taking care of the animals at the facility. I have seen many animals that we have rescued that have suffered and have special care needs because they had not been given the proper care in their previous homes.On the other hand, I have also seen how the animals have grown and how much proper care can bring out the best of the animal’s personalities.

 

My research question is: What states have the best animal protection and why? This connects to my project because I am trying to find out ways states can protect animals better. With this research I will find exactly how the states can do that. By looking at the state that has the best animal protection I can look at how other states can replicate what they are doing. I also think that if we educate people on how to take care of animals properly,then we can prevent them from being abandoned. I am going to be using pictures of the lesson plans, emails, and pictures of the activities as my artifacts. 

 

My mentor for  my Capstone is Cheri Collins. She is one of my supervisors at the Nature Center and she also teaches a program on pet ownership. She has worked with a variety of animals throughout her years at the Nature Center and she also owns many species of animals. Her email is cheri.collins@wethersfieldct.gov. I think that my learning stretch will be going out and trying to teach classes. I will push myself by making a lesson plan and teaching young children since I have never done that before.
