Job shadow

Place of job shadow: CREC Discovery Academy in Wethersfield

Person being Shadowed: Carmarie Otero

Job: Associate Instructor for ELL/Reading

I decided to job shadow Mrs. Otero because I was looking into working with children. I wanted to look into education before making my mind up on going into the health career. I was looking at education for young children to look at the different options and routes I could take with working with children. For the job shadow, I went to CREC Discovery Academy in Wethersfield. I spent their whole school day there and followed around Mrs.Otero. They started off their mornings with opening the doors for parents dropping off their children in their cars and greeting everyone. They do that everyday. After that Mrs. Otero went to greet the pre-k classes as well as the other grades. She showed me around the school and it was a good experience. That day the children had testing so I was able to ask questions while they were working on the computers. I learned that Mrs. Otero’s job is to help with the daily functions of the school. I learned that she went to college for English and Pedagogy in Elementary Education at the University of Turabo in Puerto Rico.

Through the experience of job shadowing at this school I only strengthened wanting to go into the medical field to help children. I did not like the school setting and I learned that it is not something that I want to be doing in the future. However, It did help gain some connections with teachers and staff there and I am now able to do my Capstone in the building and am going to teach some of the students there about animals.
